'We Live In Public' 8 Elements of Film

Character

  • Businessman
  • Drugs
  • Opportunist
  • Conflicting

Plot

  • Rise of the Internet entrepreneurs in late 90's.
  • Josh Harris' background as a smart but loner child. Became an internet entrepreneur starting up 'Pseudo' and was a big part of the NY party scene.
  • His insane side - personal character/double persona as 'Luvy' the clown. He was unprofessional about it and lost his job.
  • 'QUIET' Social experiment - very chaotic. Focus was surveillance and the loss of privacy.
  • 'QUIET' gets shut down.
  • Personal social experiment with girlfriend - constantly streamed their whole life. People in chatrooms made decisions for them. Idea of loss of privacy and being controlled.
  • Girlfriend breaks up with Josh Harris. He begins to lose his mind and loses all his money in investing in bad ideas.
  • Leaves the entrepreneur world behind and moves to Africa to pursue farming and escape the law.

Conflict

  • Josh Harris' experiments were causing emotional distress and were potentially illegal.

Resolution

  • His experiments would get shut down or rejected and he moved to Africa to work on an apple farm.

Structure

  • Chronological
  • Editing is chaotic and fast paced so that it creates a sense of having no order.

Scenes

  • Compilations/montage of scenes conveying the late 90's and y2k ideas of what the internet is for and what it's going to be - news, websites, peoples' thoughts.
  • Chaotic - showing people doing things that are thought of as crude or things that should be kept private.
  • Close ups of people - eyes usually. Very personal and idea of surveillance.

Dialogue

  • Professional in terms of when they were interviewing entrepreneurs and showing tv news.
  • Usually much more casual and using a lot of slang to represent the 'Pseudo' kids - the idea that the internet was changing language to be much more communicative.
  • Very personal as a lot of the documentary is showing clips from the social experiments where it's just everyday people's dialogues and vlogs.
  • WW2 / Power - Josh Harris would talk about the people in his experiment in a manner similar to Hitler. Directly compares how he wants the building in which the experiment is taking place to look like a "concentration camp".

Visuals

  • Chaotic
  • Disorderly
  • Personal
  • Surveillance - eyes and cameras.
  • Green, blue, orange
